Falcon Sports Lab

Sports of All Sorts: Taught by Riverdale Teacher & Coach, David Morris. Mr. Morris brings 34+ years of experience as a physical education teacher and coach to create fun and energetic sports activities. Mr. Morris will teach some basic skills but will primarily focus on team play and advancement of game strategies.

Comic Book Design

Our comic book class is meant to show the technical side of developing a comic and related content (visuals and written). From a creative standpoint, we aim to enhance students potential related to story building and creative writing. After a semester with us, students will know how to create comic books themselves and can show their friends how to be as creative and awesome with their ideas.

Founder and CEO of Prestige Multimedia Productions, LLC, Daniel David is passionate about guiding others to create opportunities for themselves. Mr. David has created multiple platforms for that purpose. At PMP, the motto is “Where we Aspire to Inspire” and what better way to do it than through the use of multimedia resources; a key player in today’s growing markets.

Tennis

Start playing tennis with instruction and advice from Tennis Coaches & Instructors. These coaches will help your son or daughter learn and improve their ground strokes, they will teach them how to keep score, as well provide them with tips on the strategy of the game. Our programs are designed to help your child build his or her skills while gaining self-confidence through a fun and nurturing environment.

Coding

Kodu Arcade – Intro to Coding:  3D Video Game Design (1-2 gr)

One of the best ways to get a child excited is to allow them to create something of their own. In this class, we enable young kids to make their own 3D video games by using fundamental coding concepts.

This is a fun and engaging language through which children make their own 3D adventure games by using fundamental coding concepts.   Students will take Kodu apple picking, program Kodu to play hide and seek and even help Kodu find his way out of a maze!  Students are encouraged to personalize the adventures by adding in their own ideas

Soccer Development

The world’s most popular sport is now available for children at Riverdale Country School. Each class will include proper warm-up and cool down to help prevent injury, as well as increase performance. Kids will be engaged in fun-filled activities focusing on fundamentals of soccer by learning how to defend, pass, shoot and work together as a team! This is a great sport for physical development and spatial awareness. All sessions will end with scrimmages.

Cooking

Taught by Riverdale’s own Natalie Garrick and Audrey Pearson, members of the lower school executive food staff.

Natalie and Audrey will bring their love for cooking to the classroom in our state of the art kitchen facility- with an occasional cameo from Chef Dave.  She will introduce some traditional pastry favorites as well as simple dishes from the many cultures that represent our school community.

Martial Arts

Building the skills and developing into the Ultimate Superhero is what the SuperKid Martial Arts is all about. In this modern take on a traditional martial-arts program, your little hero-in-training will develop inner strength, a strong sense of character and confidence fit for a superhero.

This SuperKid program is designed to create a happier and healthier lifestyle through martial arts training. The children will learn traditional martial arts and self-defense skills, transforming into more confident and athletic versions of themselves. The program is belted and progressive, teaching children about the rewards of setting and achieving goals. All of our instructors are trained Martial Artists who have worked extensively with kids and embody the principles and characteristics of the SuperKid program

 Mad Science: Secret Agent Lab

Step into the shoes of a detective and uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis.  You will probe the science of tracking as you stamp out scenarios and uncover codes in this session.  Some of the weekly topics in this session include : Crime Lab, Cracking the Case, The Science of Security, Agent Undercover, Sleuths on the Scene, Funky Forensics, Spy Academy, Junior Detectives, Discover Detection and Whodunit?

Introduction to the Chinese Language and Culture

Max Horne is currently a Senior and passionate Chinese language student at Riverdale Country School. He has studied Chinese language and culture for seven years on the Hill Campus. This year, he won the national Chinese Bridge Speech Contest for non-native Chinese speakers and represented the United States to the international competition in China, winning a second-place prize out of 220 contestants from 100 countries. He has spent his high school summers studying Chinese language and Buddhism in China, in addition to working for China Central Television at its Beijing Headquarters. He looks forward to sharing his passion for and comprehensive understanding of Chinese language and modern Chinese society with Lower School students this Spring.

This RiverEdge program will introduce Lower School students to basic Mandarin grammar and vocabulary. Students will learn how to write Chinese characters and gain a strong foundation in Chinese syntax and sentence construction. The course will be focused on conversational Mandarin, with an emphasis on pronunciation and intonation, which is extremely important in the Chinese language.

 

Magic The Gathering

Magic: The Gathering is the original and all-time bestselling collectible card game. Winner of the Mensa Select Award upon its debut, this highly praised and extremely popular game is designed for 2+ players who may compete or cooperate to win. Mastery of the basic mathematical operations is required, in addition to advanced reading comprehension. All materials will be provided. However, students may wish to invest a small amount to construct their own decks in order to express their own play-style.

Rocketry(Beg)

Rocketry is an excellent way for young children to learn math and science concepts, vocabulary skills, critical thinking and problem solving and, the importance of collaborative teamwork. Students will learn to construct model rockets, identify each part of the rocket, follow directions, read diagrams, follow safety procedures and work carefully and precisely, with the understanding that each step is critical to the successful launching of their rocket. This hands on activity will inspire your child to be “spaced out”!

Ms. Dimino has been teaching children the joy of building model rockets since 1997. In her course, students learn how model rockets work (science), components of a rocket and their function, construction (math/science), how to assemble the rocket (following directions) and how to appreciate their hard work once they launch successfully.

Yoga By The River

Taught by Riverdale’s own, Shelia McCorry, a certified 200 hour (adult) and Radiant Child Levels 1 and 2 Yoga instructor.

Children’s Yoga benefits children by increasing their health, fitness levels, flexibility, strength, balance and coordination while also helping to calm emotions, release anxiety and relax. During the weekly sessions, students will practice postures, learn breathing and meditation techniques, and participate in fun games and activities. The sessions encourage concentration, positive thinking, confidence and self-esteem. The fun poses and games also give free rein to children’s imaginations and creativity.     *Please bring a yoga mat.

Friday Classes:

Boxing

Just when you thought it was down for the count… here comes boxing! Develop heavyweight zest, self-control, grit, and strength of character by practicing “The Sweet Science.” Did you know that boxing is one of the three original sports and that it has found its way into almost every aspect of our culture? So put up your dukes and have tons of fun while getting the best workout and learning a bit of self-defense! It’s tough to be up against the ropes in life. Don’t throw in the towel. You have someone in your corner! Boxing can help you learn to go the distance and how to roll with the punches. Throw your hat into the ring and give boxing a try!

Mr. Pearson teaches 5th grade in class 5PP. This is his fourth year at RCS and he has two daughters who attend daycare on the Hill Campus. Mr. Pearson loves boxing and has been studying martial arts of all kinds since the age of 7. He is a big proponent of physical and mental fitness and he continues to train and box as an amateur to this day.

Robotics

Earthbot Engineers (1-2 gr)
Using LEGO ® robotics, students will learn about some of the coolest environments on the planet. They will create and program robots to: withstand the heat of volcanoes and avoid any lava in the way, have just the right amount of friction to pull their way up steep and snowy mountains, withstand the pressure of the ocean as they raise a periscope from its darkest depths, and more!

Rocketry(Adv)

Advanced rocketry is an exciting and outstanding means for teaching scientific and math concepts, vocabulary skills, critical thinking and problem solving and, the importance and benefits of collaborative teamwork. Students who have learned to construct rockets, are able to follow directions independently, read diagrams and work carefully and precisely, with the understanding that each step will result in the successful launching of their rocket. Students have the opportunity to move to Level 2 model rockets during this course. This is a great hands-on activity that can help “boost” your child’s imagination!

Chess

This fun class is designed and paced especially for beginner chess players and those with minimal chess experience. Students will learn the rules of chess quickly by playing a series of interactive mini‐games, which gradually introduce more complex elements and ideas. With the fundamentals established, students will play lots of chess and practice a wide range of tactics including important checkmate patterns. Students will complete this class with a firm grasp of the rules of chess, opening principles and basic endgames. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking and problem solving.  Students will also be able to participate in tournaments around the city.
